The absolute best mathematical card trick ever

When I was about 9 I learned a really cool mathematical card trick that has probably influenced my love of custom playing cards. Here is how the trick is done without revealing its exact mathematical secrets. First you count out piles – there is a way to do this but it does not involve trickery only a basic mathematical method – and then put them all face down in front of your subject. As I mentioned there is a very basic way to count out the cards but it is not a trick- it does not involve memorization -it is simply mathematically based.  Then you have the person pick three of the piles without touching them – actually you have them point to the three they want you to keep on the table. Next you instruct them to turn up the top card in two of the piles. After laying out all the remaining cards one at a time face down without stopping and without cheating or looking at the cards in any way you are able to tell them what the number of the top card of the third pile is with 100 percent accuracy. I showed this mathematical card trick to my calculus teacher in high school who was so taken by it that he went ahead and took the entire class period to try to figure it out. It took three blackboards and we still did not definitively define the equation for the trick – but it is easy to learn and it works and it amazes people.
